No More Tears: An Introduction To Emotional Freedom Techniques
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is the most well-known and most popular of a group of
techniques collectively referred to as energy psychology. Energy psychology is paradigm shift in the way that mental and emotional problems that
traditionally have been treated with various psychotherapy techniques can now be worked with.
The basic premise of energy psychology is that there is no differentiation between body and mind and that what we would
consider as our body and our mind are nothing more nor less than energy in various states of flow. When we are experiencing states of well-being
and ease, energy is flowing freely. When the flow of energy is disrupted, we experience lesser degrees of that well-being.
Energy psychology achieves a psychotherapeutic end not so much by problem-solving and attempting to gain insight and
understanding into our problems but rather by addressing the underlying cause of the problems, which in energy psychology terms is always the
same thing; a disruption of the flow of energy. By removing resistance to the free flow of energy within our bodies we remove the pain and
discomfort associated with negative mental and emotional states. Typically understanding and insight are a natural byproduct of this resistance
releasing.
While there are many different energy psychology methods, the vast majority of these techniques utilise the acupuncture system
or the chakra system or a combination of both. While the concept of energy may seem very new-age to many of a contemporary western background,
systems of energy medicine that utilise these energy models have been around for thousands of years.
EFT is an acupuncture based method of energy psychology in that it uses stimulation of acupuncture points to
help " dissolve" disruptions to smooth free flow of energy (Qi in acupuncture terms) within the body.
In acupuncture, pain of any kind be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual is always a result of a disruption to the free
flow of energy through our body. More specifically the free flow of energy throughout the acupuncture pathways within our body.
The foundational principle upon which EFT is based mirrors this basic premise. The EFT "Discovery Statement"
states that the cause of all negative emotion is disruption to the flow of energy in our body. The treatment principle then of EFT is to remove
this disruption and it does this by tapping on acupuncture points in a specific sequence that is known as "The Basic Recipe".
So how does tapping on acupuncture points allow us to release painful emotions and negative thought patterns.
In order to achieve the release that we're looking for, there are two steps that need to be taken.
1) Focus on the problem state. For example, if we are feeling angry, we focus on that anger, we focus on the physiological
sensations and we focus on the thoughts and self talk that comes up in relation to what we're feeling. What we are doing here is "tuning in" the
problem state in exactly the same way that we might tune in a radio station. Once we have tuned in the problem we move to step 2
2) Tap on the acupuncture points that make up "The Basic Recipe" while we maintain our focus on the problem state. By tapping
on the points we stimulate the flow of energy throughout the acupuncture system which effectively flushes out any obstruction and resistance
within the acupuncture pathways. If we have tuned the problem in correctly and have maintained our focus while we tap, after "The Basic Recipe"
has been performed the problem will in almost all cases be significantly reduced if not completely released.
Not just for emotional problems
While EFT is most often used for emotional problems it can also be incredibly effective for physical problems and physical
pain. If we go back to our basic acupuncture theory which states that pain of any kind (including physical) is a disruption to the flow of energy
in the body, we should then be able to treat physical pain in exactly the same way as we would treat emotional pain. And we can.
The two-step process that we have discussed works exactly the same way with physical pain. We focus on the problem state which
in this case would be the physical sensations and specific location of the pain. Perhaps it is a burning pain or a stabbing pain or a cold type
pain. Whatever it is, wherever it is, we focus on and tune it in. And as we do so we perform the EFT tapping sequence.
And as with the emotional example above, if the problem state has been tuned in sufficiently and focused on, the tapping will
have dramatically reduced the physical pain.
The real power of these energy psychology methods and EFT in particular is how simple they are to learn and how easy they
are to apply in those times when we really need them. While there are undoubtedly many times when we may need outside help with our problems,
many of our problems that right now may seem very difficult to get a handle on can be worked on very effectively using EFT for
ourselves.
In this way as lifes challenges occur, we have a tool that can help us remove a lot of the negativity that may be associated
with those challenges and simply get on and do what needs to be done in order to achieve the outcomes that we want in our life.
