Traditional Chinese Medicine also known as TCM, is a collection of time-honoured medical practices developed in mainland
China over many thousands of years. The English term "TCM" was created during the 1950s by the People's Republic of China so that
Chinese medicine could be exported to the rest of the world. Interestingly there's no term in Chinese language that can be translated literally
as traditional Chinese medicine with TCM practises more commonly referred to as "Chinese medicine studies”.
TCM embodies a modern compilation of ancient Chinese medicine methods. The practice of TCM includes a complex
theoretical model, based on a number of philosophical ideas that include Yin-yang theory, the Five Phases or Elements the human body channel
system, Zang Fu (internal organ) theory, and numerous diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue diagnosis. As far as treatment goes TCM
treatment methods include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and traditional Chinese massage (tuina) Additionally, therapeutic movement
exercises such as Qi Gong and Tai Ch'i are often a part of TCM treatments.
Today Traditional Chinese Medicine is often referred to as the more generic Oriental medicine, which incorporates additional
traditional eastern medical systems and methods such as traditional Korean and Japanese medical practices.
TCM theory puts forward the idea that the processes of the body are interconnected and in never-ending interaction with the
environmental surroundings. Indications of disharmony aid the Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner to interpret, address and prevent disease
and dysfunction.
In the Western world, TCM methods are looked at as alternative or complimentary medical systems, although this is
changing with many people consulting TCM doctors and practitioners as a first choice rather than a last resort which was the way not so long
ago.
In China today, Traditional Chinese Medicine is a major component of their health care system An example of this would
be Orthopaedics where all Doctors are trained in the traditional, more conservative methods of massage and acupuncture as well as orthopaedic
surgery techniques. Similarly, doctors are just as likely to prescribe herbs as they are to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs in treatment.
Although Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't function within the conventional western scientific model many TCM doctors and
researchers today are working towards bringing ancient practices into modern times.
